I definitely needed the answer to “What is a lifestream?” This is all very new to me, I’ve had an extremely slow start and have basically resorted to just adding the suggested feeds. I shall continue to experiment and hope that it wont take me too long to get to grips with it. I am so impressed with the lifestreams of my colleagues. They have been so busy and their sites look fab whilst mine is uninteresting and looks like I’ve done very little work.
I’ve felt quite clumsy trying to set things up and it has been very time consuming. I had a problem with Twitter but opening a new account resolved that. It did mean, however, that I didn’t participate in tweeting about the film festival. There have been some feeds that I haven’t been able to successfully set up, such as Tumblr and YouTube. I saw a couple of interesting articles whilst surfing and bookmarked them so I know that my delicious link works.
At the moment I don’t really have a clear idea of the shape my lifestream should take. And knowing that this is open to public viewing makes me feel somewhat hesitant about what should and shouldn’t be shared. I had misgivings about some of the content in my previous blog. It probably isn’t very wise to be so candid about some situations.
Hi Grace – maybe by lifestream looks all right but trust me I had similar qualms to you as to what to make of the whole idea and am still unsure. I even started writing a panicky email to Sian but put it in the drafts and had another go at the stream at the weekend. Searching for different terms on Google Images (I love pictures and photos) helped me ‘see’ certain things better and also led me to some useful resources. I’ve started to look more carefully at my feeds in Google Reader to see if any useful content comes up there. Tumblr or Amplify is useful for grabbing content from the net. And if you want Youtube in your stream then set up the feed with your Youtube username and then favourite the vid clip and it will be fed into the stream.
It’s funny how we all go through the acclimatisation process here on the course, each in their own way, struggling? feeling slightly lost? isolated? … – I am, a bit at least so thanks for dropping round on my blog and leaving a comment
Hi Grace, the Lifestream is looking good, and you have added some interesting content. Good use of notes in Delicious as well
.
How is adding You Tube and Tumblr going? I would definitely recommend getting these working, as they will add some richness and diversity to your Lifestream. Remember that the You Tube feed only needs your You Tube username (which should appear top right when you log in to You Tube), and also make sure that you tick ‘Include favourites in this feed’ underneath. Then all you need to do is add videos to your favourites from within You Tube. Also remember that it takes a few minutes to update! Please see the handbook however for these issues, as there will be much better descriptions there, with images. Do let me know if you can’t get these feeds working, and I’ll see if I can help. Great start!
I think you make a good point about debating what to include in your Lifestream , and I think the Lifestream itself is an excellent site for a discussion about the divisions between academic and personal life in learning. As you describe with Twitter, a good way of controlling what appears in the Lifestream is to create a new account with the service in question.
Hi Grace – totally empathise with you on the Lifestream front. I thought at first that it would be a waste of time having a YouTube account and yet there seem to be lots of things worth adding once you’re in and going! The public aspect of the blogs is daunting, though. I feel cyber-shy, I guess! All the best with the lifestream next week!
Looks like your YouTube video likes are feeding onto your Lifestream now Grace.
Hi Austin, setting things up takes a bit of getting used to, and it’s so time consuming, but I’ll get there eventually. Have spent all morning playing around with Prezi and have now run into problems trying to import the presentation. Patience and perseverance….
